About the app
This app design project involved designing a prototype for a user-centred application using wireframes.
Left Over is an innovative app designed to address the issues of food waste. The idea behind this app was inspired by allotment users as they often produce a surplus of produce resulting in a lot of goods being thrown away or left to rot. Through this app, users can easily share or swap their excess produce with others. Left Over not only provides a practical solution to minimise food wastage, but it also creates a sense of community.
Design Process
The first step in my app design was creating user personas – fictional representations of typical users based on research. This was a vital step in the design sprint process as it allowed me to shift my focus from personal preferences or assumptions to the needs and goals of real users.
I also created empathy maps to produce a deeper understanding of the user, which helped me develop a needs statement.
I researched some of the current apps that encouraged the idea of reducing food waste. Whilst researching I noticed a huge gap in the market as I couldn’t find an app that was 100% suitable for and met the needs of my user persona. I was surprised to find such little around this topic, and therefore decided to create my app to fill this gap and to
hopefully, benefit users like my own to reduce their food waste.
I analysed the strengths and weaknesses of both app competitors to help develop my app concept.
